That’s not our muffin

I’m a pain when I go into food shops these days. I’m afraid I’m driving the staff crazy, and I know I’m driving my friends crazy. I’m always in research mode. 100% of the time.

Right now I have muffins on my mind. I suspect we can improve ours. But it’s going to take some serious development work. To start with we’re doing what we always do, talking to you all and asking what you think. What do you like about our muffins? What’s letting you down?

So that muffin there, it’s from Peet’s. And the poor guy behind the counter had to dig out the nutrition book from who knows where and look it up for me. Try asking for nutritionals at your favorite fast food shop. You’ll quickly start feeling like you’re not suppose to be asking those questions.

This bad boy: 580 calories, 30 grams of fat. That’s right: 580 calories! You may not know what that means, but I’ve been looking at this stuff a lot. That’s just crazy. That’s more calories and more fat than a Big Mac. No seriously, it is. Look it up. Or one and a half servings of our french fries!! That’s right. Eating that muffin is like ordering our fries, eating them all by yourself, then stealing your friends and eating half of his.

Our banana muffins have around 216 calories, 8 g fat, and 6 g protein. Sorry, haven’t gotten around to putting that up yet. Best of all, they’re 100% whole grains (whole wheat flour, oat bran, wheat germ). But do they taste good? If they don’t we need to change them, I don’t care how healthy they are for you…

If I can just add in my two cents on your muffins… I often find them overly dense, more than a muffin I feel like I’m eating one of those high protein, high grain super dense breakfast in a bar. I am a huge fan of all of your other food, but I think you do well in looking into your muffin recipes.
    Thanks for caring so much,
    Ana

I have to say, I don’t like banana flavored muffins. I’d love some other options, even savory muffins.

    Ella –

We rotate between banana and apple-based muffins. Next time you’re by we’ll give you an apple muffin to try and tell us what you think.

Quick question–do you guys ever carry vegan breakfast sandwiches and/or vegan muffins? It’s impossible to find a tofu scramble burrito in this town (except homemade) and that would be a godsend. ~~I absolutely LOVE you guys by the way. Your truck + lunch on the MIT rooftop garden is ready to become a weekly ritual~~

I buy your muffins around twice a week. Sometimes they are awesome, sometimes they’re not so great (dense and moist in a weird way), sometimes they’re in between. I don’t really taste the difference between the banana and apple, I admit, but maybe one of them comes out with nicer texture.

I also feel like they’ve gotten a tiny bit smaller since last year. They do keep me impressively full for how small they are, but I wouldn’t mind an ever so slightly bigger muffin.

I’ve had a couple of your muffins since reading this post. And have really been considering your question.

I love that it’s packed with whole grains that make me feel full and carry me for the better part of the morning. When I eat breakfast that’s what I want.

And in that case, I don’t mind the density. I do feel like they often could be a little moister, though I realize it’s a fine balance to keep it dense & moist.

how about the breakfast sandwich? I’d guess 200-225 kcal

    How about the fiber content?

I’ve had muffins these past couple mornings, after a long muffin hiatus, and really liked both of them (especially today’s cranberry-nut muffin). They were really tasty, and I’ll come back for more.

I tried the banana hazelnut muffin a couple weeks ago and was not impressed. First off, I like that you use healthy ingredients in it, but it tasted like there wasn’t enough banana, or it wasn’t made with overly ripe ones in it (which I think would make it more moist and sweeter). it was also a bit dry and I felt for that size of a muffin, the hazelnuts were too big and should have been chopped. All I could taste were the hazelnuts.

However, I do love everything else you make!

Probably not the most accurate spot for me to post this, but any way we can get the nutritionals for the soups? You guys are doing an awesome job.

I had the apple hazelnut muffin today. I loved it! While I agree that they are dense, I’m completely satisfied. It was tasty, wholesome and I would def. get it again.

This is NOT your typical muffin option (often cakey/sugary, overly-processed and does not leave you satisfied at all… with more than double the calories).

I put some smart-balance butter on mine when I got to the office. It was great!

    Keep it vegan!

Is it possible to post the info for the breakfast sandwich? Or maybe just a ballpark estimate?

I was just sitting here with a friend and talking about your muffins and how much I love them. I think they are the ideal muffin. Not too sweet but full of flavor and I like the consistency. I would not change a thing. However the person with whom I was speaking said that he would also prefer them to be a bit less dense. I guess I see them as Breakfast and he sees them as a treat.
In any case, we both love them.

I love your muffins! Don’t change them too much. Your muffins, just like (almost) everything else you got tastes like home prepared food, that’s why I eat it. I don’t like eating pure butter.

The apple, almond, cinnamon muffin this morning was delicious. Just out of the oven. A bit more chopped almonds would give it just the right amount of protein! Could you please post the nutritional information for this muffin?

BTW, your staff in Dewey Square is so cheerful, it is very refreshing early in the morning!

Muffins with fresh corn as part of the base — wholly or partly blended smooth — and fresh berries are beautiful and super flavorful this time of year. Corn actually has a sweetness to it that is best played up with the addition of only a small amount of sweetener, and depending on the berry, a tart fruit with sweet corn is a pleasant flavor role reversal.
