Flooding at Flats Mentor Farm

By Lucia June 20, 2013

Hmong and African farmers farm the land at Flats Mentor Farm. They grow beautiful produce, most of which is native to their home countries. They vend at something like 14 farmers markets. And this year due in part to Clover’s Farmshare Program, they’ve been able to launch CSAs.

Last week we got bad news. Because of the rainy June we’ve been having, a bunch of the plots at Flats Mentor had flooded. Cara sent over a picture of what the fields looked like. The first CSA pickup was delayed by a week and everyone was worried a bunch of the crops would be totally lost.

Cara wrote to us this morning to let us know that the ground in Lancaster is so fertile that even despite flooding, the farmers are bouncing back and harvesting enough food to put together the first CSA boxes for a delivery on Monday. We can’t wait to see what arrives, I’m using this list of crops to get excited!
