For the entire month of Feburary we will be taking sign-ups for farms shares at the HUB. We have 5 farms participating, each with drop-off on a different day of the week (M-F).
I’ve been thinking about this for years, and now it’s becoming real. If you haven’t heard of a CSA before it stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Basically you give a farmer money when they need it most (right now in the middle of the winter), in return they give you a share of the produce they grow. So you pay something like $5-600 right now, they use that to hire staff, plan, buy seeds, etc. Then once a week, May/ June through the end of harvest in October, you get a giant share of produce.
Last year was the first year I participated in a CSA. It was awesome. We didn’t go to the grocery store and I’ve never had stuff that tastes so good.
If this little experiment works out 2-3 years from now we will have created a model that connects 5-10,000 city-dwellers with farmers. I can’t wait.
